Space missions often reveal useful engineering ideas through the constraints they have to survive. The European Space Agency’s Juice spacecraft is scheduled to pass Earth and the Moon in September 2026 for its third gravity assist on the journey to Jupiter. ESA says the encounter is not only a trajectory manoeuvre: the mission will also test optical navigation by taking images of the Moon’s horizon.

The flyby is designed to change the spacecraft’s speed by about 3.5 kilometres per second and bend its path by roughly 20 degrees. The navigation experiment adds another layer. Images of a planetary body can provide geometric information that helps estimate a spacecraft’s position and motion, complementing traditional radio tracking. ESA describes the test as a first for the agency’s deep-space missions.

This is not an industrial manufacturing story in the usual sense, but the engineering pattern is familiar. A critical system can perform its primary function while generating additional information that improves control of the wider system. In a factory, the equivalent might be a machine-vision or sensor layer that supports both process control and maintenance decisions—but only if the data is calibrated, available at the right time, and connected to a decision that someone owns.

The procurement lesson is to ask what evidence a technology creates, not only what task it automates. A new sensor, inspection system, or software layer may create value through better observability, but the benefit depends on integration, data quality, validation, cybersecurity, and the operating response when the signal indicates a problem. Juice’s flyby is a memorable reminder that navigation is often a measurement problem before it is a control problem.

Source: European Space Agency, Juice Earth flyby.

Further reading: evidence-led industrial transformation.
