The Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute reported a materials-development result that is interesting because it connects a familiar industrial process with a difficult advanced material. The research team says it directly grew graphene-based thin films at room temperature using a direct-current sputtering system it calls K-sputtering. The work was reported on 27 September 2026 and is described as a route toward copper-graphene composite conductors.

Graphene can offer useful electrical and thermal properties, but manufacturing it over large areas and transferring it onto another material can add complexity. The reported approach aims to control the arrangement of carbon atoms while depositing the film, allowing single, few-layer, and multilayer structures to be made without a separate transfer step. The researchers used Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction to cross-check the resulting films.

The industrial relevance is still prospective. KERI says the team plans to scale the equipment and develop a continuous production process. That means the public announcement should not be read as proof of commercial volume, final conductor performance, or a qualified supply source. It is better understood as an early process signal: if a conventional deposition platform can be adapted for a new material architecture, later scale-up may be easier to frame and test.

For a materials or component buyer, the next questions would include substrate compatibility, coating uniformity, defect control, line speed, thermal and electrical performance, process repeatability, intellectual-property boundaries, and the evidence required for qualification. New materials become procurement opportunities only when the process, quality system, economics, and supply capacity can be demonstrated together.

Source: The Asia Business Daily, reporting the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute announcement.

Further reading: industrial transformation and technology qualification.
